The book begins by attempting to simplify evolution, thinking and nature - a simple highly improbable incident of a gene getting mutating to undergo cell division that led us humans being created over billions of years. While we humans think this was an instantaneous process, the author uses exemplary story telling to keep us engaged in the understanding of the process, and appreciate the long timeline it may have occurred over.
Many arguments - origin of language, significance of memes in evolution and culture, current misunderstanding and overestimation of artificial intelligence’s relevance - in the book are developed by Daniel slowly (most likely deliberately) to enhance the reader’s ‘wow’ with evolution. If Darwin’s ‘Origin of Species’ was an attempted knock on creationism, Daniel uses his evolution theory to make more inroads to dismantle Creationism.
Books on evolution rarely discuss societal impact or human societies in relevance to natural evolution theory. The author does a great job in this respect as he uses examples from nature and evolution to critique the top-down approach of human societies - design by default or rote-learning or repeated mechanism (Darwinian) which is more bottom up design from bacteria to Bach, and at the same time he is also discussing the top-down intelligent design by introducing a lookahead method (Popperian).

I feel overwhelmed as I recall this anecdote. I do not feel superior but I realise I am closer to a natural human and have not evolved to a version of human being that survives complex societies.

The story begins with two strangers - who do not speak each other’s language at a beach - trying to communicate with hand gestures. Unable to understand each other they gradually find common signs to start basic communication - memes in genes -, and over centuries these signs become rules and a new language is born. Hindi - my mother tongue - is a great example of being a derivative from the court language of Urdu. But, as a grammar nazi myself, I find it fascinating yet humbled. My correct grammar today may remain open to misinterpretation and misappropriation later on. How irrelevant our learnings and knowledge becomes with time.

I had misunderstood him but thanks to AI feedback, I had re-read it and understood his greater objective in mentioning Hofstadter and Feynman. He cites Feynman's famous line—'if I don't create it, I can't understand it'—and the Socratic ideal of understanding the world, alongside the long interaction between Hofstadter and Abhijit Mahabal. They were more tongue in cheek quotations to suggest their oversimplification of AI’s relevance for human consciousness.

I recall having an interaction with my PhD supervisor ten years ago, when AI was still in labs and not yet mainstream. I was discussing the potential of algorithms while he saw its limitations. I remember telling him that, ‘I agree right now the outputs make no sense from algorithms and networks. But, we will give meaning to this gibberish which society will accept later on.’
Now, I feel we are trying to make inroads in this thought application. We are finding meaning in current non-gibberish output, and implicitly following Moore’s law of chips for AI non-sensical creativity output at times. Will this endeavour to justify the sometimes non-sensical and non-practical output from AI prompts lead us to stupidity or doomsday or be enslaved by AI? We do not know, but that could also be the natural course that we undertake in this millennia.
Coming back to the book review, does it leave a lasting impression on me? It does. But, I will find it near impossible to recollect and reproduce correctly all the facts, and scientific data that he has produced.

I highly recommend reading it. It is not a book that grabs attention - even though the name should arouse curiosity - but it is thought provoking and human ego humbling. Especially, when one considers that nature has enough examples of bottom-up approach as a survival mechanism, while we continue to build top-down approaches in all aspects of life, fail to achieve our goals, and start again with the top-down approach, thus revolting against nature at all times.
